March 2015 Inspiration: Liza Marquez
I am so grateful for Sandy Campy Fitness and the SC Fitness Community
After having my two kids and experiencing some very challenging family issues, I had little energy to think about my health. Comfort food was my companion, and I allowed myself to pack on the emotional weight thinking that I could eventually get rid of it. But, I was quickly made aware of the fact that this was not going to be an easy task. Because I am no longer in my twenties and I’ve had two kids, I realized my body didn’t function like it used it…ugh!
I tried my share of fad diets and various exercising programs during the past few years. While I’ve taken away some insights from them, I didn’t see much improvement in my body, and even less in my eating habits. Losing weight seemed to become a full time job for me, with no real pay off. Because I would either lose weight then gain it right back, or I would not see numbers change on the scale or my body shifting, I became very discouraged. I had decided that my age, having had children and those silly fad diets actually prevented me for slimming down. It felt like a losing battle…and not the “losing” I had wanted.
About 2 years ago I found Sandy Campy Fitness! I came to try Zumba and I’ve never left! The fun that I’ve had both in class and with the people I’ve met has helped me change my perspective on myself, my body and weight loss in general. What I needed to realize then (and I have now) is that I really, really, really needed to lighten up and give myself a break. And because of this, I’ve seen results. Wonderful results!
From the first class at SCF, I knew I found a unique place. Sandy, Fran, Lucía, Melissa, Cece and Hayley are amazing and fun instructors that create a light, enjoyable and lively setting for class. I’m excited to work out and I love the way I feel when I’m done! There are certain movements that aren’t comfortable for me to do because of my hurt knee and shoulder, but I never feel self conscious when I choose to modify a move or ask the instructors for suggestions. During Zumba I love, love, love to go a little nuts, dancing around kinda crazy (gotta get as much ab and cardio work out in). I feel free to look as silly as I want!
At the beginning of January, I signed up for the SCF Commit to be Fit Challenge and I’m so glad I did. I have an online community where we share our stories, support one another and enjoy some very delicious recipes (thanks, Holly!). The numbers on the scale matter little to me now because I see a change in how things fit. Jeans I could not wear six months ago fit perfectly. I don’t mind wearing sleeveless shirts, and by summer, I plan on being back in my shorts…
Again, I have to say, I am so grateful to be a part of this awesome, supportive and fun-loving community! Many, many thanks!
Sweet, funny, beautiful Liza,
It is so clear that you always give your best in class, and accept that your “best” is different from one day to the next. I love that you have made your health a priority, to the point that you’ve even brought your kids to class rather skip a workout. They were so well behaved and it’s because by showing up, you’ve shown them that this is important to you and they respect that. What a wonderful role model mommy you are!
Thank you for sharing your light and for being such a big part of our community.
