MAY 2015 Inspiration of the Month: Trista Gladden
I have always been active, but have always needed someone to tell me what to do. I think it all started as a tween in the 80s when I would get up in the 5 o’clock hour to do “Morning Stretch” with Joannie Greggorian on tv. Anyone else remember her? Anyone?! I’m probably dating myself. If you want a good laugh, get out your leg warmers and check out some old YouTube videos. 😉
I played volleyball in high school, started rowing in college, and continue to row and race now. In fact, I just had a race at the San Diego Crew Classic a few weeks ago, and although we didn’t win any medals, we placed better than we ever have at that race! And more importantly, I enjoyed it and felt like I raced as hard as I could have and harder than I had in the last few years. Because I row out of Ojai, I don’t get there to train as often as I’d like because of work and family obligations. But I really feel like working out with Sandy (along with some training on the erg, aka rowing machine) got me to a place where I was in racing shape. And for that I am so grateful, because I LOATHE the erg. If that’s all I was doing to train, I would’ve quit long ago.
I don’t think exercise should be a chore. It’s so important to find exercise that you love so it can be a regular part of your life. I’ve done lots of exercise programs that made me feel fit, but I wasn’t exactly enjoying them while I was doing them (none as bad as the dreaded erg though). I would run and hike, take classes like Cardio Barre, Bar Method, kettlebell, TRX, tabata, bootcamp and kickboxing, but I never enjoyed any of them as much as I do Cardio Tone, Sculpt and Tone and Hip Hop Box with Sandy! Sandy has really made working out enjoyable with her infectious energy and her workouts seem to have helped alleviate some of my back issues that have cropped up over the last few years. Woo-hoo! Not only that, but there is a great group of ladies who I enjoy working side-by-side with and who motivate me to work out harder during each class. The other thing I love about SC Fitness is the variety of classes offered. Getting to learn Zumba with Fran and boxing with Sandy and Michelle has been a blast and I’m so happy to get to do tabata with Hayley every now and again. I used to go to several different classes to get variety, but now I get almost everything I need from SC Fitness because so many different exercises are incorporated into the schedule and into each class, using all of the muscle groups and getting cardio at the same time.
I exercise for so many reasons. I love being able to play the sports I love without injury. I love how it makes me feel. I love how it makes me look. I love that I’m setting a good example for my girls. And I love being able to keep up with my girls. My girls think I’m stronger than their dad because they see me workout regularly. I won’t tell them if you won’t. I also love sweets, which I’m working on, but at least working out helps offset some of my weaknesses. I’m so happy to have found Sandy Campy (thanks to Jamina!) and can’t wait to see what the next chapter at SC Fitness will be. Whatever it is, I’m on board!
I can still remember when I’d only see you once a week for Cardio Tone. Three months later, you added Body Sculpt, twice a week. Six months later, you took a big leap out of your comfort zone by taking Zumba, and now added HipHop Box on Saturdays. WOW! I am so incredibly impressed and inspired by your focus and your self-motivation. You always know when it’s time to bump up your weights and I see how you push yourself to the next level. Thank you for being a true inspiration for your daughters and our community, myself included.
